Cleaners, Thinner & Primers

So which came first, the chicken or the egg? The same can be said for an adhesive and an adhesive cleaner. A cleaner is born from the day a new adhesive is formulated. They’ve been around from day one in our business – we believe the two go hand in hand in all types of different application and industries.

Expert advice about cleaners and thinners

Technical advice represents a major element of our service to customers. Our expertise is crucial when it comes to recommending which solvent cleaners and thinners to use. It’s our job to know the exact substrates and products our adhesives are used on so that we can identify the relevant solvent system for you to obtain optimum results. These cleaning and thinning systems are often bespoke to our customers’ requirements and can be supplied in a variety of different container types.

This is where experience counts. We’ve handled and stored unique specialist solvents for many decades on our site at Melton Mowbray. As a result, we have the knowledge and ability to develop not just special cleaning formulas but also thinners that our customers often ask us for.

Cleaners for diverse uses

Solvent based cleaners have lots of uses – the main one being to clean contamination from oil or grease on a substrate prior to bonding. However, you can also use them to clean a gluing area, to remove surplus adhesive and to clean equipment. We formulate all our cleaners to meet your specific needs.

Some customers use solvent blend systems as a solvent weld adhesive where no gap fill is required. This is often the case on thin laminate materials such as PVC where a structural type adhesive does not cure or apply in the same way as a solvent weld adhesive system. We have developed and designed systems especially to work on specific materials and machinery. As a result, they are exclusive to our customers’ application methods.

Why are thinners so important?

Customers sometimes add bespoke solvent thinners to our solvent based adhesives to thin an adhesive down. The viscosity of a solvent based adhesive can thicken – this tends to happen if a container lid has been left off for a prolonged period of time. Adding the recommended solvent thinner to correct the viscosity of the adhesive makes it more viscous and easier to apply.

With such a variety of uses, our cleaners are vital to the range of products and services that we offer. So if you’re looking for an adhesive, you are also looking for a cleaner… even if you don’t know it!
