How to Choose the Right Adhesive for Your Application

Choosing the right adhesive isn’t simply a case of finding the strongest product available. The adhesive needs to work with your materials, manufacturing process and the conditions the finished product will experience.

Get the choice right and you can achieve a reliable, durable bond while improving production efficiency. Get it wrong, and you could face inconsistent bonding, product failures, wasted materials and costly rework.

So, what should you consider when selecting an adhesive?

1. Start With the Materials You’re Bonding

The first question to ask is: what materials need to be joined?

Different substrates have very different surface properties, meaning an adhesive that works perfectly on one material may perform poorly on another.

Common substrates include:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Plastics
  • Glass
  • Rubber
  • Foam
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Composites
  • Textiles

You also need to consider whether you’re bonding the same material or two different materials.

For example, bonding metal to metal presents different challenges from bonding metal to plastic. Materials such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) can also require specialist adhesive solutions because of their low surface energy.

The starting point should always be substrate compatibility.

 

2. Consider the Environment

Where will the finished product or component be used?

An adhesive used indoors in a controlled environment will have very different requirements from one exposed to outdoor conditions or an industrial environment.

Consider factors such as:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Water and moisture
  • UV exposure
  • Chemicals and solvents
  • Vibration
  • Impact
  • Repeated movement

For example, an adhesive may need to withstand significant temperature fluctuations in an automotive application, while moisture resistance could be a much greater priority for an outdoor construction product.

Choosing an adhesive based on the conditions it will actually experience can make a significant difference to long-term performance.

 

3. Think About the Type of Bond You Need

Not every application requires maximum bond strength. Instead, think about how the bond will be loaded.

Will it experience:

  • Tension?
  • Shear?
  • Peel?
  • Impact?
  • Vibration?

This is important because an adhesive that performs exceptionally well under shear may not be the best choice for an application dominated by peel forces.

You should also consider whether the finished bond needs to be rigid or flexible. A rigid adhesive may be ideal for a structural assembly, while a more flexible formulation could be preferable where materials need to move or expand.

 

4. Consider Your Production Process

The adhesive doesn’t just need to work; it needs to work within your manufacturing process.

Ask yourself:

  • How is the adhesive going to be applied?
  • Is application manual or automated?
  • How quickly do components need to be assembled?
  • How much open time is required?
  • How quickly does the bond need to develop handling strength?
  • How long can the components remain in a fixture?
  • What dispensing equipment is available?

For high-volume manufacturing, these considerations can be just as important as bond strength.

An adhesive with excellent performance characteristics isn’t necessarily the right choice if it can’t be applied efficiently at the required production speed.

 

5. Understand Viscosity and Application

Viscosity describes how easily an adhesive flows.

A low-viscosity adhesive may be ideal where you need it to spread easily or penetrate a narrow joint.

A higher-viscosity adhesive may be more appropriate when you need the product to remain where it is applied, particularly on vertical surfaces or when gap filling is required.

The application method should therefore influence adhesive selection.

Depending on the process, adhesives may be applied using:

  • Rollers
  • Brushes
  • Spraying systems
  • Nozzles
  • Automated dispensing equipment

The adhesive needs to be compatible with both the substrate and the application equipment.

 

6. Look at Open Time and Cure Time

Production speed can have a major influence on adhesive selection.

Open time refers to how long an adhesive remains workable after application, while cure time describes how long it takes to develop the required bond strength.

If you’re assembling large or complex components manually, you may need a longer open time.

For a high-speed production line, a faster-setting adhesive could be more appropriate.

It’s also important to distinguish between initial handling strength and full cure. An assembly may be ready to move before the adhesive has reached its ultimate performance.

 

7. Consider the Finished Product

Think beyond the manufacturing process and consider what happens to the finished product.

Does the bond need to last for years?

Will it be exposed to:

  • Heat or cold?
  • Moisture?
  • Chemicals?
  • Constant vibration?
  • Repeated loading?
  • Outdoor conditions?

Long-term durability is particularly important for products where adhesive failure could result in expensive repairs, returns or safety concerns.

The adhesive should therefore be selected based on the expected service life, not simply whether it produces a strong bond during initial testing.

 

8. Don’t Ignore Surface Preparation

Even the right adhesive can fail if the surfaces aren’t properly prepared.

Dust, grease, oils, moisture and other contaminants can interfere with adhesion.

Depending on the substrate, you may also need:

  • Cleaning
  • Abrasion
  • Priming
  • Corona treatment
  • Plasma treatment
  • Flame treatment

This is particularly important when working with difficult or low-surface-energy materials.

The adhesive selection process should therefore consider the entire bonding system, rather than looking at the adhesive in isolation.

 

9. Consider Cost, but Look at the Bigger Picture

Price per kilogram or litre is only one part of the equation.

A cheaper adhesive isn’t necessarily the most economical option if it:

  • Requires more product per application
  • Creates more waste
  • Takes longer to cure
  • Requires additional surface treatment
  • Causes inconsistent bonds
  • Increases rework or product failures
  • Isn’t compatible with your existing equipment

Instead, consider the total cost of bonding.

A slightly more expensive adhesive that improves production efficiency and reduces failures could ultimately be the more cost-effective solution.

 

10. Test Before You Commit

Laboratory specifications are useful, but real-world testing is essential.

Before introducing a new adhesive into full-scale production, test it under the conditions the finished product will actually experience.

Testing should consider:

  • Substrate combinations
  • Surface preparation
  • Application method
  • Cure conditions
  • Environmental exposure
  • Expected loads
  • Long-term durability

Where possible, testing should replicate the actual production process rather than simply testing the adhesive under ideal laboratory conditions.

There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Adhesive

One of the biggest mistakes when selecting an adhesive is trying to find a universal solution.

The best adhesive isn’t necessarily the strongest, fastest or cheapest. It’s the one that provides the right balance of performance, application characteristics, durability and cost for the specific job.

That’s why adhesive selection should begin with the application rather than the product.

Understanding your materials, production process and end-use requirements will put you in a much stronger position to select the right solution.
